Learning on the job is a social activity – communicate and interact with your coworkers as you begin to learn. Heather Crozier, a victim of her own success, warned us of the dangers of over-committing … If you apply for things or submit proposals, be prepared for them all to be accepted! 🙂 She also spoke about the inevitable necessity of on-the-job learning. She emphasized the importance of asking for help or volunteering to get involved – it’s a great way to get started! I’ve never done this, but I thought it was a great tip – Cara suggested finding someone with a similar research interest and reaching out to that person directly about co-presenting. If you’re worried about presenting for the first time, present with someone else who has a shared interest. More helpful tips and resources can be found on Laura’s slides.Ĭara Calabrese shared with us some of her tips for developing conference presentations, and I found them very helpful! To get started, she advised, think of the activities that you already do in your job, as these will be easier to present. How has your time working at a register helped you build customer service skills? What is your philosophy of service? What have you learned from negative customer service experiences? She encouraged us to reflect on these questions and use them to guide our patron interactions. Laura advised new professionals not to discount past experiences working in retail or other service industries when on the job market. Laura Birkenhauer was our first speaker, and she focused on two topics: customer service skills and public speaking. In case you couldn’t make it, I thought I would give a quick recap of each of our speaker’s presentations, although this is only a tiny taste of the many nuggets of wisdom they shared with us … The speakers were excellent, the audience questions were interesting, and the post-event social was a lot of fun! Overall, I would call the event a success! 🙂
Thanks to Ohio Northern’s generosity in sharing their space for the afternoon, we were able to accommodate many interested new professionals in the Northwest part of the state. On Friday, May 19th 2017, the New-to-Libraries Network ventured out into new territory and had our first event in Ada, OH at Ohio Northern University. Our lovely panelists sharing their advice Mary will be speaking on the importance of being prepared for the interview and offer some strategies that can assist in responding to questions of the search committee. Hricko is one of OhioLINK’s Affordable Learning Ambassadors. Mary is also a Professor with the University Libraries at Kent State University. Mary Hricko serves as the Library Director of Kent State University Geauga Campus and the Regional Academic Center. Lori and Susan will share on the differences between a resume and Curriculum Vitæ and best practices for both. The duo will also offer tips for handling and submitting online job applications.ĭr. Susan DiRenzo Ashby and Lori Fielding are both veterans of dozens of search committees at The University of Akron and are looking forward to sharing their wisdom and advice. Susan is also an Associate Professor with the University of Akron. Susan DiRenzo Ashby currently serves as the Coordinator for Library Systems at University Libraries at the University of Akron.
Lori is also the subject librarian for Art, Asian & Middle East Studies, Counseling, Gender Studies, Psychology, and Sociology at the University of Akron. Lori Fielding is an Associate Professor of Bibliography at University Libraries at the University of Akron.
Previously she has worked as the Distance Instruction Librarian at Morehead State University and as a faculty librarian at the College of DuPage. Karla will talk on the importance of coordinating resumes and cover letters with the specificities of a job advertisement. Karla Aleman is the new Dean of the Library and eLearning at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, OH.
